LEAGUE CITY & GALVESTON, TEXAS — In a courtroom, credentials are not a resume decoration. They are a weapon. At Tad Nelson & Associates, the firm has spent three decades building an arsenal that no other criminal defense firm in Southeast Texas can replicate.
Most criminal defense attorneys carry a law license and maybe a bar association membership. Tad Nelson carries something far more formidable.
Board Certified in Criminal Law by the Texas Board of Legal Specialization since 1996 — a credential that requires demonstrated courtroom experience, peer evaluation, rigorous continuing education, and a demanding written examination — Nelson represents a standard that fewer than three percent of Texas attorneys ever achieve. But board certification alone was never going to be enough for him.
Between 2010 and 2014, Nelson pursued a credential that had never been earned the way he earned it. After five intensive trips to Chicago and two and a half years of hands-on scientific training inside the renowned, fully operational laboratory of Dr. Edward Polite, Nelson completed his curriculum and was designated a Lawyer Scientist by the American Chemical Society in February of 2014 — becoming the first non-teacher of the course to ever receive the designation.
He followed that in December of 2016 with a Master‘s in Forensic Toxicology from the University of Florida. When the government sends its chemists and scientific experts to the stand, Tad Nelson is one of the only defense attorneys in the country who doesn’t need to guess what they’re going to say. He already knows — and he knows exactly how to dismantle it.
What makes Tad Nelson & Associates genuinely unique is that this level of commitment to credentials doesn’t stop with its founder.
Managing Partner Amber Spurlock is herself a Lawyer Scientist, having earned the designation from the American Chemical Society in 2015. A former Judge Advocate General in the United States Marine Corps, Spurlock does not leave her military precision at the door when she enters a courtroom — she brings it in with her.
Her practice encompasses criminal law, family law, juvenile law, military law, and criminal appeals, and her approach to every case reflects the same meticulous preparation and accountability that defined her service. In a firm built on the principle that preparation wins cases, Spurlock is a natural fit at the highest level of its leadership.
Together, Nelson and Spurlock represent something that exists almost nowhere else in Texas criminal defense: two Lawyer Scientists at the leadership of the same firm. When the government leans on scientific evidence — blood alcohol content, drug analysis, forensic toxicology — Tad Nelson & Associates is not guessing. They are answering science with science.
The firm’s professional affiliations reinforce this commitment to operating at the front edge of the field. Nelson’s memberships include the Texas Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers, Texas Trial Lawyers Association, National College for DUI Defense, Harris County Bar Association, Galveston County Bar Association, and the State Bar College.
These are not honorary listings. They represent active engagement with the organizations that shape criminal defense practice in this state — ongoing education, professional debate, and access to the latest developments in law, science, and courtroom strategy.
With offices in both League City and Galveston, Tad Nelson & Associates serves clients across Galveston County and the broader Houston metropolitan region.
The firm handles the full spectrum of criminal defense — felony and misdemeanor matters, DWI defense, drug charges, violent crimes, and federal charges — as well as divorce, child custody, and personal injury cases. Every practice area is handled with the same preparation and precision that has defined this firm since 1995.
In Southeast Texas, any attorney can hand you a business card. Very few can hand you a credential stack like this one.
