LEAGUE CITY & GALVESTON, TEXAS — Most people who walk through the doors of a law firm are scared. Whether they are facing a criminal charge, fighting for custody of their children, or dealing with the aftermath of a serious injury, they are trusting a stranger with some of the most important and painful moments of their lives. At Tad Nelson & Associates, that reality has never been lost on anyone in this building, and it drives everything about the way this firm operates.
Tad Nelson founded this firm in 1995 on the back of three years as a felony prosecutor and a trial record that turned heads across the Galveston County courthouse. He has since tried more than 400 jury trials, earned Board Certification in Criminal Law, become a Lawyer Scientist through the American Chemical Society, and added a Master’s in Forensic Toxicology from the University of Florida. The credentials are extraordinary, the courtroom record is unmatched, and the preparation behind every case is second to none. But Nelson has always believed that winning is only half the job, whether that win comes in a criminal courtroom, a family court, or a personal injury trial. The other half is making sure every client feels like they are not facing that fight alone.
That belief is not a marketing talking point at Tad Nelson & Associates. It is a firm-wide standard. Every new employee, from attorneys to administrative staff, is required to read Unreasonable Hospitality by Will Guidara, the landmark book that redefined what genuine, world-class service looks like. The principle is simple: clients are not just paying for an outcome. They are paying for a partner to take the entire journey with them. That standard applies whether the client is fighting a felony indictment, navigating a difficult divorce, or pursuing a personal injury claim. Understanding that distinction, and acting on it every single day, is what separates this firm from every other office with a law license on the wall.
The cases this firm handles are never abstract legal exercises. A client facing a DWI or a federal indictment is not thinking about legal strategy, they are thinking about their family, their freedom, and their future. A parent fighting for custody of their children is not thinking about procedural timelines, they are thinking about bedtime routines and school pickups and whether their family will survive this. A person injured through someone else’s negligence is not thinking about liability theory, they are thinking about medical bills and lost income and how they are going to get through the next month. Tad Nelson & Associates has built its entire client communication model around understanding exactly where that client is emotionally, and answering their questions before they even know how to ask them.
That commitment has extended into how the firm uses technology. Tad Nelson & Associates has made a deliberate investment in artificial intelligence as a tool for client communication and case management, not to replace the human element of legal representation, but to make every touchpoint faster, clearer, and more reassuring. From streamlined case updates to more responsive communication systems, the firm is leaning into AI specifically because its clients deserve a smoother, less overwhelming experience. When someone’s freedom or family is on the line, waiting days for a return call or a case update is not acceptable. This firm has decided that it never will be.
Managing Partner Amber Spurlock brings the same client-first standard into every case she handles; and her path to this firm is unlike anyone else’s in Southeast Texas. A former Judge Advocate General in the United States Air Force, Spurlock deployed to Baghdad, where she presented cases in Iraqi courts inside the Red Zone. Before that, she prosecuted Courts-Martial and served as a Special Assistant United States Attorney, trying cases in federal court. She is also an ACS-accredited Forensic Lawyer-Scientist, the same designation Nelson holds, meaning this firm has two attorneys who can answer the government’s science with science of their own. Military service builds a particular kind of attentiveness: the understanding that details matter, that communication under pressure matters, and that the people depending on you deserve your full focus every single time. Spurlock carries that into every client meeting and every courtroom she enters. Office Manager Shelly Darnell anchors that same standard on the operational side. With more than forty years of legal experience, from Galveston’s Dibrell & Dibrell to the County Court at Law, Shelly ensures that nothing falls through the cracks and that every client interaction reflects exactly what this firm has promised.
The firm’s practice is broad by design. On the criminal side, Tad Nelson & Associates handles the full spectrum, felony and misdemeanor matters, DWI defense, drug charges, violent crimes, sex crimes, and federal charges. On the family law side, the firm represents clients in divorce proceedings, child custody disputes, and related family matters with the same intensity and preparation it brings to the criminal courtroom. Personal injury cases round out the firm’s practice, ensuring that clients who have been wronged have a seasoned trial attorney in their corner. Regardless of the matter type, the approach never changes: prepare relentlessly, fight without compromise, and never let a client feel like they are on this journey by themselves.
With offices in League City and Galveston, Tad Nelson & Associates serves clients across Galveston County and the broader Houston metropolitan region. The firm’s digital presence, including its website at www.tadlaw.com, blog, and active profiles on LinkedIn, Facebook, Instagram, X, Tik Tok and YouTube, reflects its commitment to staying accessible and transparent, providing clients and the public with plain-language information about legal processes and firm activities.
In Southeast Texas, there is no shortage of attorneys. There is a shortage of firms that treat every client like the outcome matters personally, because at Tad Nelson & Associates, it always has.
